PLAYING DEAD
This behavior is a lot of fun to train. One of the best ways to teach this is to use a treat. Before you teach this behavior you want to make sure that your dog already knows how LIE DOWN. The biggest reason is that the dog is going to start this behavior in a LYING DOWN position.
I am going to let you in on a little secret in teaching this behavior. The one area you want to watch on your dog are the hips. I know it sounds a little funny hearing that right now, but trust me, that is a key in teaching this.
What you want to do is just give the dog a treat in the lying down position. As the dog is taking the treat, start having him take it from either the left side. This means his head will be facing either left or right. With whatever position you choose, make sure you stick with it.
Condition your dog to take the treat from that position. As he begins to take the treat, guide the dog so that he has to take the treat almost from a little higher, but still from the LYING DOWN position. Watch your dog's hips and see if they rotate. Once they rotate, your dog is now in a position to roll on his side easier.
Get to the point where the dog is taking the treat and rotating his hips as he takes it.
Once this happens, you can start guiding the dog a little farther so that he rolls on his side.
When you get to this phase, It won't take long for you to begin to start fading out the treat, and just giving a visual cue, and saying something like "on your side".
Once your dog is taking the cue, you can start getting farther and farther back. When you have some distance, the behavior is trained.
