The Alternative Training Collar
Before I begin, let me make it clear that I have always believed that NOT every training tool should be used with every dog. That is actually something I talked a lot about on my TV series "GOOD DOG U" on Animal Planet, and also one of the reasons I wrote my book, "WHAT COLOR IS YOUR DOG?" When we are talking about LIGHT physical corrections that may be needed in the training of some dogs, it is essential an owner use the correct training tool that will give her the most effectiveness and control, yet will not hurt the animal or jeopardize their relationship. It is imperative that the person handing the dog be able to make the correction as easy as possible on the dog and themselves. Remember that an abusive person will always find a way to abuse an animal, regardless of the training tool. Instead of taking away valuable training tools, let's put the right tool in the right hand with the right animal.
For a number of years, I have been looking to invent a training tool for the dog owner or trainer that will provide the same effectiveness and control of a chain collar, yet is different in appearance and how it feels to the dog when he is corrected.
THE FUNCTION
The Alternative Training Collar functions much like a chain collar. As the owner corrects the dog, all of the force comes from the opposite side of the animal, and it releases after the light correction. The only issue I have had with using a chain collar on some dogs, as well as other owners, is that when the chain collar is pulled, the chain is what the dog feels on his neck. With The Alternative Training Collar, the portion of the collar that the dog senses on his neck is made of a soft leather or nylon.
THE DIFFERENCE
“The Alternative Training Collar” and "The Martingale Collar”
The way the Martingale Collar is designed, the chain is centered in back of the dog’s neck. When the owner pulls, all of the force comes from directly behind the dog. Once the collar constricts, the owner still must pull harder because of the positioning of the chain. With The Alternative Training Collar, all of the force comes from the opposite side of the dog. Once the collar constricts, the owner still has leverage which makes correcting easier for both the dog and the owner.
