WHAT VARYING THE REWARDING OF THE ANIMAL ACCOMPLISHES
So why do I vary the rewarding of the animal, and why do I use a variety of different things to reward the animal with? It adds drive, bumps up the animal's attitude, and totally increases the quality of behaviors. If you look back at marine mammal training, the bows (the dolphin jumping out of the water) were higher, the animal's responses were sharper, and it created more consistency whether we were training the animal in a training session, or doing a live show.
Let me tell you that this works the same way with dogs. If my dog knows that he might get a bunch of treats after I click two or three times every once in a while, his excitement and attitude totally increases.
I must tell you that I have expressed my idea and this philosophy in a few different forums and have been totally blasted by a variety of individuals. I think that people need to learn to think outside the box. Just because you have learned something one way does not mean that other ideas do not work, especially if the ideas and philosophies were proven years ago by a number of good trainers.
This is a behavior that is not seen in any of the Sea World parks anymore called the Ride Jump. When you get on the back of a killer whale, you get a total sense of their power. It is amazing because you are 33 feet to the bottom in about a half a second! If you notice, I wrap my legs around the dorsal fin...... and learn to hold your breath.
