LIE DOWN

There are a few different ways to teach this behavior. One way is with the use of treats, and the other way is without the use of treats. The reason that there are two ways is that some dogs are really good about getting gently manipulated into positions, and sometimes introducing treats actually becomes a little more confusing for these types of dogs.

With whatever way you wish to teach your dog, make sure that he is trained to SIT first.

With using treats, have your dog SIT, and take the treat and move it towards the ground. Teach your dog to simply take the treat from lower and lower to the ground without getting up from the SITTING position. If he gets up, just repeat it until he gets it right. This might take some time.

Once the dog is taking the treat from near the ground, begin moving the treat a little farther from the dog ( maybe 4 inches away), still keeping it on the ground. What is going to happen is in order for the dog to take the treat without getting up from the SITTING position, he must LIE DOWN.

Once the dog is lying down after being guided with the treat, the next step is to begin saying "LIE DOWN". Once the dog is consistent, the next step is to fade out the treat and just use your hand as the cue, still saying "LIE DOWN"
