YOUR DOG'S NAILS
Trimming your dog's nails is really a huge part of caring for your dog. It is vastly important to understand that if your dog's nails are left untrimmed, it can really cause a lot of problems including broken nails that can be very painful to your dog. They can also bleed too. Not only that, but when they get too long, they can easily by caught on something and get ripped off.
A lot of people have asked me when the right time to trim their dog's nails are. One of the best signs are when you start hearing the dog's nails on the floor. You also want to talk to a breeder because nails can differ from breed to breed too.
WHO TRIMS THE NAILS?
I know that there are many people that would rather have someone else trim the dog's nails. This is not a bad idea at all, and there are many people who can do it. You can either have your veterinarian or groomer do this. My suggestion is that if you have any doubt at all, just pay to have one of these individuals do it.
TRIMMING THE NAILS YOURSELF
When you are trimming your dog's nails, remember that you are only cutting away the excess nail. You need to understand a little about the nail before you do this. If you notice there is a pink part and a white part. The pink area contains blood vessels and nerve endings. It is essential that you leave a fair amount of excess the white area to make sure you do not hit the "quick" (nerve endings and blood vessel). Recognizing where the excess area is and where the nerves and blood vessels are really become crucial.
These are just a few tips that I mentioned, but if this is something you want to try, I highly recommend you sit with someone once or twice that has had experience doing this. It is not something you want to try without first getting a little educated firsthand.
BLACK NAILS
We know that some dogs have black nails. My suggestion is that if your dog has black nails and you have no real experience trimming nails just pay someone to do it. The main reason of course is that you cannot see the difference between the white part and the pink part because the entire nail is black, and it would be very easy to hit the quick.
