LEATHER COLLARS

When I talk to about collars and leashes I always try to remind my clients that leather products do not necessarily need to be used on every dog. There are a number of alternatives to leather leashes and collars by using something a little less expensive such as nylon leashes and collars.

I have to tell you I have been a huge fan of leather products for a number of reasons. The biggest reason is the the fact that leather products just last longer than other products because of the simple fact they are made of leather. But using a product that is made of leather does come with a price in that you are going to spend more money. But in my opinion they are well worth it.

So what kind of dog would I recommend a leather collar for? If you were to look at my color chart, the warmer colored dogs that are more high strung would be great candidates for a leather collar. These would be the ORANGE and RED dogs. As far as personality, this would be any dog that has a very high prey drive, or that is easily exciteable. I would also encourage people to use a leather collar for a dog that wants to pull and jump.

The one thing I like about leather collars is that there is normally more "substance"and thickness than that of a nylon collar. Nylon collars are generally much thinner. For dogs that are pulling or that are very strong, it just makes sense to have something that is thicker, stronger, and more durable.
