REDIRECTION IN DOG TRAINING

When we redirect the animal, we are simply redirecting the animal’s focus onto something else other than what they are fixating on. This could be a variety if things.

This might be the person that is causing the fear or concern to your dog, it might be a stationary object that your dog has some sort of fear of, or it may be a moving object like a car or skateboard. The catch is to find something the animal likes in the form of a treat that is more interesting than the person or the object the animal is focusing on. What will play a major factor here is the degree of fear of the person or object.

One of the first things you are going to want to do is find some type of “high value” treat the dog likes. It can be anything that the dog absolutely goes crazy over.  In many cases it might be a Bil-Jac treat, a piece of steak, chicken, or maybe cheese. The point is this treat should be something the dog ONLY gets when you are dealing with this issue. Your dog will be given this treat ONLY from the individual you are having issues with, or the person that is helping you with the fear of the object, and will not be given to the dog by you.

As much as a huge fan of redirection that I am, I understand that redireciton is not the sole solution to every issue that involves fear. But this is something that I am almost always inclined to begin with.
