Beagles
Beagles are members of the hound family which means that they are scent hounds. This means that they love sniff and find things. This is why they are so sought after in law enforcement to sniff out fruits and vegetables at the airports. They are a high maintenance dog, but they like to have a job, and respond well to training. If they get bored they can be destructive, but this breed makes an excellent family dog. Bichon Frise
This is a breed that is extremely intelligent, entertaining, and totally devoted to the owner. And they do everything with so much with enthusiasm. Although they are very happy and playful dogs the can have an attitude. These are a high maintenance breed, and they need exercise and are happiest when they are walked. Border Terrier
This is a breed that is great with children of all ages. They live to please and are really a great companion dog. This is a dog that is prey driven and will chase other critters, so you want to make sure this breed is not off leash around cars. Boston Terrier
This is a breed that is very smart, energetic, and can be great with kids, but the kids need to really understand the dog. Because of their energy, Boston Terriers can get overly playful, and can get a little out of control if you have kids that are constantly screaming and jumping up and down. Dachsund
The Dachsunds are scent hounds and they were bred to chase game. If you have gophers, they will do a great job trying to get rid of them. Because of their curiosity and barking, they do make excellent small watch dogs too. They also are good family dogs, and at the same time, they will guard your house. They need obedience and will be totally devoted to their family. If you don’t let them get overweight they will live a long time. English Cocker Spaniel
This is a breed that needs lots of love and attention, and they also need structured discipline. They are very people oriented and will look for your leadership as well as companionship. Because of their coat, these dogs need to be brushed out at least once a week. Because they are a drop ear dog, they have a tendency to get ear infections. Fox Terrier
Fox Terriers have an incredibly high prey drive meaning that they like to play, and play rough. This is why I would not recommend this breed of you have kids under 10 years old. French Bulldog
The French Bulldog is a very sweet and gentle dog that can make a great family pet. Like the English Bulldog, they cannot swim, so if you have a pool, it must be childproof. Jack Russell Terrier
This is a breed that is a terrier meaning that they were not bred to sit on your lap. They were bred to hunt, and they were bred to flush the fox out of the hole. Remember that they are a working terrier. They like to play and play rough… and have a lot of stamina. But they are also a very loyal dog. Whippet
This is a breed that is very clean and quiet and good with kids. Whippets must be part of the family and cannot be kennel dogs. This is a breed that are known as sight hounds, meaning that they were bred to be hunting dogs so if they see something like a squirrel or rabbit, they are going to want to chase it.
